Marangu Route

KILIMANJARO CLIMBING: MARANGU ROUTE, OPTION ONE: 5 DAYS/ 4 NIGHTS
KILIMANJARO CLIMBING: MARANGU ROUTE, OPTION TWO: 6 DAYS/ 5 NIGHTS

The tourist route, an easy walks as far as the Kibo hut. The lower sections provide fine forest and moorland walking. The lunar landscape of the saddle leads to the Kibo ht, above this tedious scree leads to the crater rim. All huts on the route are manned and radio contact with the park headquarters at Marangu. Just above the park gate the western route through the forest provides a longer, more difficult but beautiful walk along narrow path beside streams.

There is often no water at Kibo hut and it either has to be carried from last water or melted from snow or ice if this is available. During peak periods the hurts are sometimes overfull because of groups altering itineraries or for other reasons. At these times all facilities will be severely over strained.

Day One: The path begins at 1980m and ascends through a section of forest. From Mandara Hut (2700m) you can visit nearby Maundi Crater (two hours return) for good views to the main peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.

Day Two: Two roughly parallel paths run through the forest and then a zone of giant heather, meeting near the start of open moorland. The terrain is undulating and steep in places, but the paths are easy to follow to Horombo Ht (3700m) – a good place to spend an extra acclimatization night.

Day Three: The path divides after Horombo, with the more popular one to the west. After passing the landmark Last Water Point and crossing the Saddle, it joins with the steeper and rougher eastern path at Jiwe La Ukoyo (pointed rocks), from where it's one to 1½ hours to Kibo Hut (4700m).

Day Four: From Kibo Hut the path zigzags up scree slope to Hans Meyer Cave (5182m), where it becomes steeper and decidedly a slog. From Gillman's Point (5680m), with spectacular views, it's another two to 2½ hours along the edge of the crater rim to Uhuru Peak Africa's highest point. It's usual to start this stage – the most strenuous – shortly after midnight so as to see the sunrise from the crater rim, and because the scree slope up to Gillman's Point and the snow on the path to Uhuru Peak will still be frozen, making the walking safer and less tiring. The return from Uhuru to Gillman's takes about one to 1½ hours, and it's another easy two hours or less from they're to Kibo Hut. From Kibo to Horombo is two to three hours.

Day Five: The final day retraces the route to Marangu gate, with Mandara Hut at about the halfway point.

KILIMANJARO CLIMBING: MARANGU ROUTE, OPTION TWO: 6 DAYS/ 5 NIGHTS

Day One:  Drive to Marangu gate where the walk will begin through a thick rain forest which takes about four hours to Mandara Hut (2750 m) for dinner and overnight.

Day Two: After breakfast proceed slowly following a trek through the forest and then through the savanna bush to Horombo Hut (3489 m) for dinner and overnight.

Day Three: This is a day of acclimatization (a rest day) to allow time to explore an interesting area and increase the chance of making to the peak and return to Horombo for an overnight.

Day Four: A hard days climb to Kibo Hut (4703 m about 6-7 hours) crossing the barren sub-Alpine terrain of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks.  You will need to relax on arrival as the next stage begins shortly after midnight.

Day Five: You will start early at around 1.00a.m, following the zigzag path up the screen stopping frequently to catch a breath in this starlit air.  This is the steepest and most demanding section of the climb, five hours to Gillmans point 5681 m to see sunrise behind Mawenzi, illuminating the plains. You will then walk a further 45 minutes around the crater and up to the highest point UHURU peak the summit of Africa.
